Pedicures, Pennies and Deep Thoughts

As we all know spring is upon us here in North Carolina (and if you didn’t know, now you do)…which means fun sundresses and flip flops! I’m quite pumped to finally be able to show off my homemade pedicures. Honestly, they’re just not as rewarding when your feet are stuck in socks and shoes all day. And yes, I do my own pedicures…and have never gotten a professional one…I’m a little wary about other people touching my feet. I know I’m a freak…I’ve accepted it.

After excitedly pulling out all my spring/summer clothes from last year I decided that my wardrobe definitely needs a little updating this year....so I’ve been perusing numerous sites for inspiration. I rarely ever purchase anything from these generally overpriced sites. Instead I use the ideas I see to bargain shop for fun trendy pieces. I just don’t believe in spending $100 on a trendy dress that I’m not going to want next year. However, I will spend $20 on a thrift shop/consignment/second hand store dress and rock it all season long.
While window shopping on hautelook.com at BCBGMAXAZRIA dresses on sale I came to notice a disturbing trend. All of the models look seriously undernourished. To quote one of my college roommates: Eat a freaking cheeseburger! So I thought…man, I wish they would use real size people because of course that dress looks good on a pencil…but I’ve got boobs and an ass…and a little pooch to worry about disguising. Then I thought about seeing these dresses on myself and was sickened by my train of thought.

The dresses would be so much less appealing if they were modeled on average people with imperfections. In fact, I would be less likely to want to buy them. What have we come to when we don’t want to buy things if they aren’t displayed on a stick thin model of society’s “perfect woman”? Why do we set ourselves up for disappointment and self-doubt when we don’t look exactly like the models?

Whoa…kind of deep for a Tuesday afternoon…but makes you think…
