WTF Girls- Please Don't Be So Dumb

So I’m listening to the radio as I get ready for work this morning and the DJ starts talking about young girls and “sexting”. If you don’t know what this term means you probably live under a rock but its sexual text messages & pictures that girls and boys send to each other. They tell a story of an 8th grade girl that sent a full front nude pic of herself to her “boyfriend”. When they broke up just a few days later, he forwarded that pic onto another girl in the 8th grade. She then decided to add the message- “If you think this girl is a slut, forward to everyone you know” As you might probably guess, within about 24 hours, the entire school had seen this picture message. It was the equivalent of this 8th grade girl walking down the hall during school naked.

Now, I hear this story and it does a few things to me. One- it makes me really sad that such young girls are doing things like this to impress boys. Two- it makes me REALLY scared because I have a baby sister currentlyin the 8th grade. I didn’t even have a cell phone until I was 18 and I’m pretty sure they didn’t even come out with text messaging till a few years after that so this whole subject is a little foreign to me. Sure it’s a fun thing to do when you are old and in a serious committed relationship but, GIRLS : IF YOURE NOT DON’T BE SO F-ING STUPID!

I try use my common sense with things like this but then I thought about it and realized not everyone is blessed with this gift so let me let you in on a little something…. IT’S A BAD IDEA. The boy you send it to will ALWAYS show someone else or forward it on, etc. I have enough horny guy friends to have seen this with my own eyes MULTIPLE times. My favorite time was when a guy ripped out his phone at a bar and then showed it to an entire group of people with everyone laughing at this girl who yes, might be a huge whore BUT she might have just really like this guy and thought she was doing something exciting for him. Idiot.

This radio story bothered me throughout the day and I wondered why no one has ever explained this topic and the negative consequences it can have to these young girls?. Then I felt like a real dummy because it dawned on me - I’ve never even had this conversation with my own little sister. What a prick. So, it’s going to the top of my to-do list.

Moral of the story- this is not something you need to ever worry about if you make a conscience decision to NEVER do it. Seriously, there are a lot of other ways to be sexy or whatever the goal of this is than to take revealing pictures of yourself. OK. I'm done with my mom rant...... for now.
